The second annual Small Business Saturday, a program sponsored by American Express, is hoping to continue to drum up sales for local businesses.
The promotion provided customers a $25 credit on their card, if they spent the same amount at a participating local merchant. American Express bumped up the cap from 200,000 to 300,000 and it has been a social media success.
As of 11:00 pm EST., 2.76 million like “Small Business Saturday” on Facebook, which is up from last year’s 1.2 million. Also, there is over 30,000 Tweets on Twitter, which is largely attributed to Twitter making it a promoted trend.
With 28 million small businesses creating 99.7% of the country’s jobs, I think it is a great promotion American Express put together, and it really does offer a great incentive for consumers to support local businesses. Who wouldn’t want to get $25 free and help support their community?
Hopefully, the tradition will continue next year with even larger figures to report.
